Earth Day 2025: Building India’s Green Future

Earth Day 2025, celebrated on April 22nd, shines a light on India’s struggles—Delhi’s air feels like smoking 10 cigarettes daily, and 600 million people lack enough water. It’s a wake-up call to act now.

India faces big environmental problems because cities are growing fast, rural areas depend on nature, and climate changes hurt farming and daily life. Earth Day 2025 is a chance for India to think and work on these issues.

Five major problems stand out: air pollution making cities hard to breathe in, water shortages and dirty rivers, climate change causing floods and heat, waste piling up, and forests disappearing with animals losing homes.

This article looks at India’s environment in 2025 with facts, then imagines a 2035 of fresh air, clear water, strong farms, less trash, and green forests, built by everyone’s efforts for Earth Day 2025.

Where We Stand Today (2025)

  1. Air Pollution
  • Data: India’s air is very dirty. IQAir’s 2024 report says the PM2.5 level (tiny harmful particles) is 50.6 µg/m³, five times what’s safe. Delhi’s PM2.5 is 91.6 µg/m³, one of the worst in the world. Cities like Kanpur and Patna are also in the global top ten for bad air. A 2021 Lancet study, updated for 2025, says air pollution causes 1.67 million deaths yearly from lung and heart problems, putting pressure on hospitals.
  • Policy: The National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), started in 2019, planned to cut PM2.5 by 20-30% by 2024 compared to 2017. A 2024 Nature Sustainability study shows an 8.8% drop in six cities, but this is mostly because of better weather, like stronger rains, not because of the program. NCAP works in 122 cities, but results differ a lot.
  • Gaps: Rules aren’t followed well. Bharat Stage VI, which limits vehicle pollution, works in big cities but not in smaller ones. Farmers in Punjab burned 10% more crop waste in 2024, says CPCB, because machines to avoid this are costly. Smaller cities don’t have enough air monitors, so leaders don’t know how bad things are.

  • Policy: The Jal Jeevan Mission has done well, giving 60% of rural homes clean water by 2025, up from 17% in 2019. But only 28% of sewage is cleaned (CPCB, 2025), so rivers and lakes stay dirty, undoing some progress.
  • Gaps: In dry areas like Marathwada, people depend on water tankers because groundwater is running out. City lakes, like Powai in Mumbai or Ujjani in Pune, aren’t fixed because of less money and people not caring. States sharing rivers, like the Yamuna, argue instead of solving problems.
  • Success Story: Singapore’s NEWater cleans and reuses 40% of its water. By 2030, Indian cities could try this, cleaning sewage for homes and factories, saving rivers and lakes from running dry.
  1. Climate Change Impacts
  • Data: The IPCC’s 2022 report says temperatures could rise 1.5-2°C by 2035, cutting rains by 10-15%. This hurts farming. In 2024, heatwaves affected 45 million people, says State of India’s Environment 2022, and odd rains caused floods in cities and fields.
  • Policy: The National Action Plan on Climate Change got renewables to 46% of India’s energy by 2025, a big step. But coal still powers 55% of electricity (CEA, 2025), adding to pollution. Plans to stop floods exist but aren’t enough in many places.
  • Gaps: Farmers in rain-dependent areas don’t get seeds that survive droughts—only 20% do. Flood walls in Assam and Bihar broke in 2024’s strange rains because they weren’t strong or planned well. Cities like Delhi get hotter without enough trees.
  • Success Story: Tamil Nadu mixes trees with crops, increasing harvests 30% in dry areas. If 10 states do this, it could protect food supplies from climate changes with little money.
  1. Waste Management
  • Data: CPCB’s 2023 data says India makes 277 million tons of trash yearly, and 90% of the world’s river plastic comes from here (Science, 2021). Only 5% of waste is recycled, so landfills and rivers get clogged as cities grow.
  • Policy: Plastic Waste Management Rules and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) make companies handle their trash, but a 2025 CSE study says only 8% of plastic is collected. Rules are there, but fines are weak. Swachh Bharat made people aware, but systems aren’t ready.
  • Gaps: Big cities like Pune sort trash well, but smaller towns don’t, blocking drains. Villages have no trash pickup—they burn or dump it, even with Swachh Bharat’s messages.
  • Success Story: Indore sorts 95% of its trash since 2019, collecting it daily and making compost. If 50 cities copy this, India’s landfills could shrink, turning trash into useful things like fuel.
  1. Deforestation & Biodiversity Loss
  • Data: Global Forest Watch (2024) says India lost 19% of its trees since 2000. The Western Ghats lost 5% in 10 years (WII, 2024). Forests with tigers and elephants are shrinking, hurting nature and climate.
  • Policy: The Green India Mission wants 33% forest cover, up from 24% in 2025, planting 2 million hectares since 2019 with CAMPA money. Planting happens, but many trees aren’t local, so they don’t help animals or soil much.
  • Gaps: Illegal tree cutting continues in Northeast India because checks are weak and people need wood. Paths for animals, like Odisha’s elephants, get blocked by mines and roads, causing 30% more fights with humans in 2024. Villages aren’t involved enough in saving forests.
  • Success Story: Rajasthan’s Arvari River project grew 70 km² of green land with village help. If 20 rivers do this, it could bring back animals and water, showing small efforts work big.
  • Digital Tools: Websites like Parivesh and OCMMS help track rules, but only 40% of factories use them (MoEFCC, 2025). Villages don’t know about them, so they don’t help much there.
  • Takeaway: India has better plans like NCAP and Green India, but they don’t work well outside cities. Half the country lives in villages, but most action is urban. Everyone knows the problems, but turning knowledge into action needs work.
